Breaking the cycle the United Way

As you consider your 2012 United Way Contribution, maybe you're wondering where your support goes and who it actually helps. Dwight Edwards, who works at PortMiami, can tell you first hand. As a youngster, Dwight spent lots of time at the Richmond-Perrine Optimist Club, which he says provided a safe alternative to the streets and giving him the basic life skills and job training that would pave the way for a successful life. Got a story like Dwight's? Share it with the rest of us... and don't forget to donate.

United Way creates a new beginning for County employee

Transit employee Victoria Elliott arrived in Miami from Cuba shortly after her 12th birthday as an Operation Pedro Pan child -- alone, deaf, not knowing a single word of English and feeling totally alienated. Though she had lost her hearing at age four, it was the United Way that made it possible for Victoria to see an audiologist, get fitted for a hearing aid, and enroll in lip-reading and speech classes -- all at no cost -- within six months of arriving in her new country. By the time she reached high school, Victoria was fluent in English and would go on to win the Miami Herald Silver Knight Award for Foreign Languages. She would study in France and graduate from college.
