Vizcaya Volunteer Guides
In 2004, the Vizcaya Volunteer Guides celebrated 50 years of service to Vizcaya Museum and Gardens. Since 1954 – just one year after Vizcaya first opened its doors as a public institution – the dedicated men and women who make up the Volunteer Guides have offered tours of the main house to the public every day of the year except for Christmas.

Today, there are about 150 active Vizcaya Volunteer Guides, who, as a whole, offer tours in ten different languages. Tours focus primarily on the history of the so-called American Renaissance and Miami’s place in this history, the role of internationalism in the United States and local culture, and the richness of the visual arts and landscape design.

Specialized School Tour Training

Starts Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Vizcaya is seeking volunteers interested in leading  newly developed tours for school students.  As a School Program Guide, you will have the unique opportunity to receive training in the areas of both theme content (geography & exploration, American Renaissance, design and architecture, and art history) and guiding techniques.

School Program Guides are needed Monday through Friday in the mornings and early afternoons, to lead tours for students in grades 4 through 12.  The seven week training program includes readings, group discussions, presentations, and individual projects.  The sessions are scheduled for Tuesdays from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and take place at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

The School Program Guides course has opened my eyes to the wonderful learning tool that Vizcaya is and has given me the skills and confidence to facilitate this learning process with children,” according to Vizcaya Volunteer Guide Jo Mobley.  Other benefits to being a School Program Guide at Vizcaya include camaraderie, specialized training and complimentary copies of select museum publications.

Registration for the School Program Guide Training is required.  Please contact Vizcaya's School, Youth and Family Program Manager Wendy Wolf to sign up at wendy.wolf@vizcayamusem.org or call 305-860-8435.
