Frequently Asked Questions -- Backflow Prevention

Why am I required to have my Backflow Prevention Assembly tested and how often must I have it done?

Since the backflow preventer is a mechanical device with springs, moving parts and rubber seating surfaces, which wear over time, it must be tested upon installation and every year thereafter to ensure that the assembly is working properly.

What is a Certified Tester and how can I find one?

A Certified Tester is a person who has completed a 40-hour training course in backflow prevention assembly testing and has passed a proficiency test to prove his/her knowledge. Many plumbing, fire sprinkler, lawn irrigation, and backflow preventer testing companies are listed in the local telephone directories, or if need be, the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department, Cross-Connection Control Unit maintains a partial list of Companies with Certified Backflow Prevention Assembly Testers Adobe Reader.

How much does it cost to have my Backflow Prevention Assembly tested?

Each individual company determines the cost of this service. Prices may differ greatly, so receiving several quotes is recommended.

Why do I have to install a Backflow Prevention Assembly on my property?

The Miami-Dade County Code, Chapter 32, Article VIII requires Backflow Prevention Assemblies to be installed on certain services depending on the degree of hazard, the type of service (i.e. fire suppression system, irrigation system, and domestic water system), and the use of the facility. The type of Backflow Prevention Assembly that is required also depends on the above-mentioned criteria.

Who can install a Backflow Prevention Assembly?

A validly licensed plumber and/or contractor may install a Backflow Prevention Assembly.

How much does it cost to have this done?

Each individual company, and not the County or the Department, determines the cost of the service. The prices may differ greatly, so receiving several quotations is recommended.

Is there a permit fee to have the Backflow Prevention Assembly installed?

Yes, there is a permit fee to have a Backflow Prevention Assembly installed. The fees are determined by the Building Department of the city in which you are having the assembly installed.
