Miami-Dade County raises $69,000 for drinking water efforts in Central America

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
Miami-Dade County raised $69,000 for the organization Water for People to sponsor a drinking water project in Central America, to honor the memory of the late Robert A. Cuevas.  Cuevas had served as Chief Engineer of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) from 1985-1995 and his lifelong career was dedicated to providing safe drinking water to his fellow citizens.

The funds were raised as part of a five-month countywide campaign spearheaded by both Miami-Dade Commissioner Natacha Seijas and WASD.  A check for the $69,000 was presented to the president of Water for People, Frederick H. Elwell, at a special presentation of the Board of County Commissioners today.

“I am especially proud to be a part of this very worthwhile effort, helping the less fortunate obtain one of the most precious resources necessary for life: water,” Commissioner Seijas said.  “I want to thank the Water and Sewer Department and the rest of the Miami-Dade County family for cooperating in this undertaking.”

“We could not have done this without the support of Commissioner Seijas and the hard work of my staff,” said John Renfrow, Director of WASD.  “We understand how hard it is to provide clean drinking water every day, so we knew right away this was a good cause.”

WASD is the fifth largest public water utility in the United States, based on population served.  Founded in 1991 by members of the American Water Works Association (AWWA), Water For People is a United States-based private, nonprofit international humanitarian organization that supports the development of sustainable safe drinking water resources and improved sanitation facilities in developing countries.
