Notice to Proceed to be issued for Water Use Permit project in South Miami-Dade

24-Inch Water Main Will Distribute Water From New South Miami Heights Water Treatment Plant

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will issue a Notice to Proceed the first week of May for installation of a 24-inch water main in South Miami-Dade.  Work will begin in late May and be completed by the fall of 2008.

The project consists of installing a 24-inch water main composed of ductile iron along a short stretch of SW 296 Street in south Miami-Dade, from SW 162 Avenue to just east of the C-103 canal.  The project is expected to cost approximately $700,000 and will involve installation of the pipeline underneath a canal.

As part of this project, traffic along SW 296 Street will be affected.  Flag men and signs will be posted while work is taking place, allowing traffic to proceed.  At the actual moment of installing the pipeline under the canal, the bridge over the canal is expected to be closed to traffic for short periods of time.  When that happens, motorists will be detoured to other streets in the area.

The 24-inch water main will eventually distribute water from the future South Miami Heights Water Treatment Plant (SMHWTP).  This project and the SMHWTP are part of the $1.9 billion in capital improvements WASD is conducting over the next two decades, in order to meet the conditions of the 20-year Water Use Permit granted to WASD in 2007 by the South Florida Water Management District.  For more information on the 20-year Water Use Permit (WUP), visit WASD’s WUP Central website at http://www.miamidade.gov/wasd/wup.asp
