(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- On July 13, a contractor for the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) will begin doing preliminary work at both ends of the Bear Cut Bridge on Key Biscayne in advance of lining the existing pipe located under the bridge. The preliminary work is not expected to affect motorists, bicyclists or pedestrians, but all persons should note that workers will be present in the area. This work is expected to take approximately 10 business days to complete.
This existing 12-inch sewer pipeline serving Key Biscayne was replaced last year by a new pipe installed under the Bear Cut waterway. This work allows the existing pipe to be lined and used to provide reclaimed water from a new facility at WASD’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant on Virginia Key, for irrigation and other purposes. Relining the existing pipeline for reclaimed water, as opposed to installing a new pipeline, offers the dual advantages of reduced cost and reduced disruption of traffic caused by the extensive work involved in installing a new pipeline.
The actual relining work is scheduled to take place in August. WASD will send an advisory to the media before actual work begins.
