The right westbound lane (outbound from the island) on the bridge will be closed around the clock until the morning of Wednesday, August 27th, to allow work to proceed.  Afterwards, all lanes on the Rickenbacker Causeway will reopen. 

The lane closure will affect mostly motor vehicle traffic.  Bicyclists are advised that part of the closed lane will be temporarily used as a bicycle lane; signage will be posted onsite to that effect. 

The existing 12-inch sewer pipeline serving Key Biscayne was replaced last year by a new pipe installed under the Bear Cut waterway.  The lining work taking place now on the existing pipe will allow it to be used to provide reclaimed water from a new facility at WASD’s Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant on Virginia Key, for irrigation and other purposes. 

Relining the existing pipeline for reclaimed water, as opposed to installing a new pipeline, offers the dual advantages of reduced cost and reduced disruption of traffic caused by the extensive work involved in installing a new pipeline.
