Notice to Proceed issued for two Water Use Permit projects at Miami-Dade's South District Wastewater Treatment Plant

Projects are part of a major effort to reclaim highly treated wastewater

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --
The Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) has issued Notices to Proceed this month for two major projects at its South District Wastewater Treatment Plant (SDWWTP).  The plant is the site of 14 related projects designed to increase the plant's treatment capacity and lay the foundation for future reclaimed water projects.

One of the projects involves building a new pump station capable of transferring 285 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated effluent to the plant's new filter system, and meeting future peak flows.  The other project consists of building chlorine contact tanks for enhanced disinfection of treated effluent.

The two projects are part of a larger effort at the South District Wastewater Treatment Plant to expand the plant's maximum treatment capacity for wastewater by 60 MGD, from the current 225 MGD to 285 MGD, and provide for high-level disinfection of wastewater, a pre-cursor to the planned future reclaiming of wastewater treated at the plant.

The planned reclaimed wastewater undertaking is part of the $1.9 billion in capital improvements WASD is conducting over the next two decades, in order to meet the conditions of the 20-year Water Use Permit granted to WASD in 2007 by the South Florida Water Management District.  For more information on the 20-year Water Use Permit (WUP), visit WASD's WUP Central website at http://www.miamidade.gov/wasd/wup.asp.
