The Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department Commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act with a "Toast to Tap Water"

(MIAMI, December 12, 2014) - Weddings, births, anniversaries and the upcoming holidays are just some of the reasons why you would make a toast to mark a special occasion. Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2014, is just such a special event as it commemorates the 40th Anniversary of the Safe Drinking Water Act.

To celebrate this milestone and honor this most basic of needs, the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer Department (WASD) invites you to join in the festivities and raise your glass in a “Toast to Tap Water” through the end of the month. To participate, WASD encourages you to take a picture commemorating your “Toast to Tap Water” and post it to Twitter with the hashtag #ToastToTap.

“I’m excited about toasting our tap water during this special anniversary,” says WASD Director Bill Johnson. “Miami-Dade County’s water is delicious and meets or exceeds all local, state and federal requirements. WASD tests our water more than 150,000 times each year before it ever makes it to the customer’s home. We take pride in the product we deliver to more than 2.3 million customers and visitors each and every day.”

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was originally passed by Congress in 1974 to protect the public’s health by regulating the nation's public drinking water supply. The Safe Drinking Water Act is the federal law that ensures the quality of Americans' drinking water.

Under SDWA, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for drinking water quality and oversees the states, localities, and water suppliers who implement those standards. The “Toast to Tap Water” celebration will highlight the value of safe, reliable water services for public health and a strong regional economy.
