Water For People (WFP) is an international nonprofit development organization committed to the long-term impact of increased access to safe drinking water and improved sanitation and health. Their mission and vision: Strive to use water as a true catalyst for change.
Water For People coaches and facilitates – and then – the local partners implement the projects. This unique approach designs partnerships to work with local expertise and identify the organizations that already exist in each country and community.
By involving members of each local community and using the creativity of local people the community is able to utilize locally available materials and learn how to install and maintain each project.
By North American standards, the work of Water For People is simple, yet each one of the projects is life-saving. Their projects, most of which range in cost from $1,000 to $10,000, include building and installing a community hand pump or a gravity-fed water system; many projects develop around existing community education centers and include school hand-washing stations and health and hygiene education.
Through the steady support of generous individuals, all sectors of the North American water industry and the ever-increasing support from schools, churches, and civic organizations, Water For People was able to serve more than 98,000 people in 2006 and has partnered with non-governmental organizations and communities in 42 countries around the world, its foundations date back to the 1980s.
Water For People is currently working in Central and South America, India and Malawi.
