Nominate and celebrate with the Hispanic Advocate of the Year


MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Hispanic Affairs Advisory Board (HAAB) under the Office of Community Advocacy, is accepting nominations for its third annual Hispanic Advocate of the Year community and district champions. The event will raise funds for HAAB’s scholarship program, which is aimed at granting support to minority college students. The reception will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on September 20, at the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue, Coral Gables, FL 33134.

During the reception, HAAB will celebrate and highlight advocates and leaders in Miami-Dade County who work tirelessly for the betterment of Hispanic and minority issues in our community. For tickets to the event, visit: https://bit.ly/2JzFC6Q.

Please submit a bio of your nominee along with the name, organization, telephone and email address of both the nominee and nominator. You should explain the reasons why your nominee should receive this recognition. Submissions should be emailed to [email protected] by August 2, 2019.

The Hispanic Advocate of the Year for 2018 was Osvaldo Soto, founder of the Spanish American League Against Discrimination (SALAD).

The Community Champions for 2018 were:

  • Alina Hudak, Deputy Mayor, Miami-Dade County Government
  • Diana Venturini, Director, Fund and Resource Development, Office of Community Engagement, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
  • Aidil Oscariz, Vice President of Policy and Advocacy, Catalyst Miami
  • Patricia Hernandez, Esq., Immigration Attorney, Rotella and Hernandez, LLC
  • Tania T. Sanchez, Criminal Investigation Division Victim Advocate, Miami Beach Police Department

HAAB also will be presenting awards to advocates selected by various County commissioners for their hard work within their commission district. The District Champions for 2018 were:

  • Marlene Arribas, Executive Director, Hispanic Coalition
  • Miriam Urra, Executive Director, Allapattah Community Action Agency
  • Betty Alonso, President and CEO, ConnectFamilias Inc.
  • Rosa E. Kasse, President and Founder, Hispanic Coalition
  • Carmen Castro, Major, Miami-Dade Police Department
  • Rene Infante, President, Redland Market Village
  • Zoe Prieto, President, Children in Action Foundation
