MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women, under the Office of Community Advocacy, and County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, participated in a historical march commemorating the 100 year anniversary of Women’s Suffrage. The march took place on Jan. 18, as part of Art Deco Weekend 2020.

The year 2020 marks the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote. The passage marked the largest expansion of democracy in the history of our country. The legal right of women to vote was established over the course of more than half a century, first in various states and localities, sometimes on a limited basis, and then nationally in 1920.

To celebrate the women who led the struggle and to honor the Native American women who inspired them, marches and events throughout the United States are ongoing and underway to commemorate the significant milestone of August 26, 1920.

The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women advocates for women in the community and strives to improve their quality of life. The Commission for Women was created in 1971 as an advisory board to the Board of County Commissioners, the County administration and the public at large about issues pertaining to the status of women.
