MIAMI – As #OurCounty continues to reopen, there is still a demand for COVID-19 supplies for the elderly and their caregivers. Elder Affairs Advisory Board Member and Senior Advocate for the Office of the Mayor Teri Busse-Arvesu received a donation of 500 disposable gloves from Silvia Lopez of the Community Medical Group, a Florida Medicaid and Medicare health services provider. The Aug. 27 donation went to the Elderly and Disability Services Bureau of Miami-Dade County Community Action and Human Services Department.

The Elderly & Disability Services Bureau serves the elderly with disabilities in a variety of settings. Services include: facilitating volunteer opportunities; counseling through our disability program; assistance with transportation, care planning (case management), homemaking, personal care, chore, respite, meals programs, meal delivery, adult day health care, and other activities that are provided through senior focal point and specialized senior centers.

Since the caregivers need disposable gloves, the Elder Affairs Advisory Board allocated this donation towards them. In response to the pandemic, and with concerns for the health and safety of older adults, the Miami-Dade County Elder Affairs Board created a mask drive that reached the 10,000 mark in August, and continues to accept donations for face masks and other COVID-19 prevention supplies. If you are interested in making a donation towards the vulnerable elderly population, or would like to find out more information, please contact Katherine Bolt or call 305-375-3025.

The Elder Affairs Board was established by an ordinance and approved unanimously by the Board of County Commissioners. The Board’s mission is to expand the support for seniors in Miami-Dade County, while allowing them to play a more active role in the local government by crafting strategies to better meet their needs. The Board serves in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and the Board of County Commissioners, to assist the elderly community, which makes up 16 percent of the County’s population.

The Office of Community Advocacy, under the Board of County Commissioners, oversees nine advisory boards and the Miami-Dade County Goodwill Ambassadors Program. The Office is charged with making Miami-Dade County "One Community" that embraces our diverse and unique population.
