MIAMI – In order to celebrate the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, rows of cars formed a caravan in downtown Miami on Sunday, Sept. 27. South Floridians decorated their vehicles with posters and flags as they beeped their horns celebrating Justice Ginsburg’s contributions to justice and gender equality. The event was organized by Miami-Dade County Commission for Women and partners. A simultaneous Zoom meeting took place while the [bit.ly/RBGMap]procession looped from Miami-Dade County Courthouse to the Freedom Tower at Miami-Dade College.

The Miami-Dade County Commission for Women, under the Office of Community Advocacy, partnered with the League of Women Voters, Gwen S. Cherry Black Women Lawyers Association, ACLU of Greater Miami, MDFAWL, National Lawyers Guild, NCJW Miami, The Women's Fund, Catalyst Miami, Positive People Network Inc., and the Dade County Bar Association, to hold the non-political, non-partisan car caravan and Zoom meeting event.

At the virtual meeting, Commissioners Daniella Levine Cava and Eileen Higgins joined female attorneys and judges as they shared some words about the impact of Justice Ginsburg in their lives as women and lawyers.

“There are so many who lack equality in our society today,” said Commissioner Daniella Levine Cava. “Can we imagine a world where there is no difference based on race, religion, or nationality? For me, Ruth Bader Ginsburg give us the courage and inspiration to imagine a world in which we are all afforded equal rights and justice under the law.”

“Her loss is a significant one for our nation, especially in these days and times, but nevertheless, we must continue to fight for justice, just as she would have if she were still here with us today,” added North Miami City Clerk Vanessa Joseph.

“When my grandmother was born, she could not vote, when my mother was applying to college most colleges would not accept her, so yes, changes have been made and Ruth led the way on many of them but there is more work to be done,” said Commissioner Eileen Higgins.
