Chairman Gilbert to honor fraternity with Omega Psi Phi Way
MIAMI-DADE – Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert, III, alongside Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee, co-prime sponsored legislation approving the co-designation of Omega Psi Phi Way, which was approved at the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, March 5.
This resolution approves the City of Miami Gardens’ co-designation of a portion of Northwest 156th Street, between Northwest 42nd Avenue and Northwest 47th Avenue, in honor of the rich history and legacy of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. and its contributions to the community.
“Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is an organization that continually moves forward and changes the world. I am excited to join my brothers in celebration of this much deserved recognition. Now, we will always have a special place in the City of Miami Gardens recognizing the contributions of this great organization,” said Chairman Gilbert.
Chairman Gilbert and Commissioner McGhee, who serves as the District 9 County Commissioner, are both members of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc.
Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., also known as Omega Psi Phi, was founded by three undergraduate students with the assistance of their faculty advisor at Howard University in Washington, DC, on November 17, 1911. It was the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically Black college. The fraternity adopted the four cardinal principles of manhood, scholarship, perseverance, and uplift. The name of the organization was derived from the initials of the Greek phrase meaning, “friendship is essential to the soul.” There are more than 100,000 living brothers with over 750 undergraduate and graduate chapters, and the fraternity operates in 20 countries across the world.
Miami-Dade County is home to three undergraduate and three graduate chapters, which include Sigma Alpha (North Dade), Kappa Gamma (Florida Memorial University), Pi Nu (South Dade), Omicron Delta (University of Miami), Alpha Delta Eta (Florida International University), and Zeta Nu Nu (Downtown Miami).
On March 13, 2024, the Sigma Alpha Chapter will celebrate its 85th Chapter Anniversary. Their initiatives include community food distributions, blood drives, mile cleanups, voter registration drives, domestic violence awareness seminars, human trafficking seminars, back to school drives, and more. The co-designation will also celebrate the chapter’s milestone and their service and commitment to the community.
