Commissioner Monestime hosts Juneteenth kick-off with PK’s Family Fun Day celebration

MIAMI-DADE – Commissioner Jean Monestime and radio personality, Papa Keith, have teamed up with 103.5 The Beat and Papa Keith 4 People Matter Foundation (PK4PM) to host PK’s Family Fun Day on Friday, June 17, from 3 to 7 p.m., at Gwen Cherry Park, 7090 NW 22nd Ave., Miami, FL 33147. This free event will coincide with a 24-hour cease-fire to prevent gun violence in Miami-Dade County. It will begin on Thursday, June 16, at 7 p.m. and end on June 17, at 7 p.m., the close of PK’s Family Fun Day celebration. Event organizers have asked the community to help spread the word to make the 24-hour cease-fire a success.

“As we get ready for Juneteenth, we remind our community that this is a holiday to reflect and celebrate freedom. For that reason, I ask for the violence and gunfire to cease. The 24-hour cease-fire and Family Fun Day will work in conjunction to bring awareness on the gun violence issues happening throughout the country. Our events are geared to promote community engagement, music, peace, and unity,” said Commissioner Monestime.

"For me, it's so important to share with the youth the intention of the 24-hour cease-fire. With this initiative, we're hoping to save lives and bring peace in the community. We know during the summer months, when school is out, youth and gun violence increases. We're hoping that this event helps to change that and change the minds of people who might not make the best decisions when it comes to using a gun to commit crimes. We know one event won't solve all the community's problems in one day, but we hope that we can help be the catalyst to spark change,” said Keith.

This Juneteenth celebration will include a Kids’ Zone, filled with rides, free food for kids, and games, and a 3-on-3 father and son basketball tournament. There will also be a celebrity basketball game with professional and college athletes.

Guests will have a variety of delicious food available for purchase from local food trucks and music by some of the top DJs in the market. In addition, attendees will be treated to a special performance featuring Hip-Hop and R&B artists from South Florida.
