Commissioner Bastien releases statement on Trump Administration’s decision to end TPS for Hondurans and Nicaraguans

MIAMI-DADE – Commissioner Marleine Bastien releases the following statement on the Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Hondurans and Nicaraguans:

I am deeply troubled by the Trump Administration’s decision to end Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for more than 70,000 Honduran and Nicaraguan immigrants — many of whom have lived in the U.S. for over two decades, contributing meaningfully to our communities and raising American-born children. Once again, this abrupt and shortsighted reversal puts families at risk of separation and creates unnecessary fear and instability in cities like ours, where TPS recipients are vital members of the workforce and economy.

Last week, a federal judge rightly blocked the Trump Administration’s attempt to end TPS for Haitians before its scheduled expiration in 2026, citing legal and procedural violations. That decision affirmed what many of us have long said: TPS recipients deserve fairness, dignity, and the right to plan their lives with certainty.

I stand with all TPS families and urge our Congressional leaders to work together and pass legislation that gives permanency to these most deserving families. This overdue decision will reflect our nation’s values of compassion and justice. It is time!
