Commissioner Eileen Higgins and Miami-Dade Parks to host food distribution event to support the Miami-Dade farming community and families in need

MIAMI-DADE – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, District 5 and the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces Department are hosting a free drive-thru food distribution on Saturday, May 16, at 9 a.m. at the Miami-Dade County Auditorium, 2901 W Flagler Street, Miami, FL 33135.

Several South Florida community groups have joined forces to create Adopt-a-Box, a program that raises funds to purchase local and Florida-grown fruits and vegetables directly from our farmers who need help during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic. The produce purchased from the farms are assembled and distributed to families and individuals in need. This program is led by Redland Ahead, Unity Groves, and Taste of Redland.

At Saturday’s food giveaway, Adopt-A-Box will distribute 800 20-pound family-sized boxes to Miami-Dade County residents.

The event will be organized on a drive-thru, first-come first-served basis. Recipients are required to wear masks, remain in their vehicles, and open their trunks when it’s their turn in line to receive the food. No walk-ups will be permitted.

“As the unemployment numbers rise, so do the numbers of food-insecure families,” said Commissioner Higgins. “Local farmers whose crops usually go to our hotels and restaurants are feeding the working families who need it. I’m proud to support the efforts of our farmers to provide fresh produce to those in need.”
