Statement from Miami-Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins Regarding New Traffic Pattern on 21st Avenue in Response to Fatal Traffic Incident Near Shenandoah Library
MIAMI-DADE – "The recent tragic traffic accident near the Shenandoah Library, which resulted in the loss of life, has deeply impacted our community. In the wake of this heartbreaking incident, Miami-Dade County has acted swiftly to enhance safety for all residents who walk and exercise, visit the library and park, or simply enjoy their neighborhood.
At my request, the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) has installed new 4-way stop signs along SW 21st Avenue from SW 16th Street to Coral Way. This new traffic pattern on 21st Avenue is aimed at slowing traffic and improving visibility - so please slow down and take the time to learn it. To ensure a smooth transition, my office has implemented an outreach plan to notify residents about these changes.
City of Miami Police will be on-site to assist with the implementation of the new traffic pattern. We are also working with the City of Miami Resilience and Public Works Department, which is actively advancing a comprehensive traffic calming plan for the area to prevent future tragedies.
Pedestrian safety must always come first. As always, I remain committed to building safer streets for everyone. I want to thank Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and the dedicated team at DTPW for their prompt and proactive response.”
