Commissioner Sosa highlights the issues presented by Argentine black and white tegus

On March 15, 2022, the County Commission adopted legislation, sponsored by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, urging to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the South Florida Water Management District to explore and undertake additional measures to contain the spread of Argentine black and white tegus throughout the state. The tegu is a large invasive lizard, introduced through the international pet trade, which threatens native wildlife and is a particular danger to threatened species.

“I thank the FWC for its actions to slow down the spread of tegu lizards, however, more needs to be done to protect our native wildlife,” said Commissioner Sosa. “It is my hope that additional resources are allocated towards this effort.”
