Commissioner Sosa pushes for increased fines for polluters
MIAMI-DADE - On July 19, 2022, the County Commission adopted an ordinance, sponsored by Commissioner Rebeca Sosa, to increase civil penalties for violations that harm the environment including those with the potential to adversely impact Biscayne Bay. Additionally, the Commission accepted an amendment that included stiffer penalties for illegal open burning on residential properties.
“Existing penalties were not severe enough to discourage those who illegally dump in Biscayne Bay or pollute our environment with violators boasting that it was just the cost of doing business,” said Commissioner Sosa. “I hope these stiffer fines will discourage these illegal practices that harm our health and quality of life.”
