Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins announces District 8 Art Competition: District 8 Creates!

MIAMI-DADE – On Tuesday, Jan. 25, Miami-Dade County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins will be partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to launch the District 8 Art Competition: District 8 Creates! High school students within District 8 public schools will be able to register their art pieces and earn the chance to have their works publicly displayed in a traveling exhibit and win a variety of prizes.

Winners will be designated District 8 Youth Arts Ambassadors and will have the chance to present their pieces to the Pérez Art Museum Miami’s (PAMM) Teen Arts Council and meet with one of PAMM’s incredible curators. Additionally, winners will have the amazing opportunity to have their artwork featured in local artist John Brandolino’s Wynwood gallery during Art Basel week. The top contestants will also receive annual student passes to the Pérez Art Museum Miami, and the first-place winner will receive a bonus family pack of free passes to the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science.

The theme of this year’s competition is “The Future is Ours,” and students will be provided with a list of guidelines and requirements to follow. Winners will be announced in April. Students looking to participate must register by March 25, either online at [bitly.com/d8creates]bitly.com/d8creates or by calling the District 8 office at 305-378-6677.

“Art is not only a way that allows our children to express themselves, but helps foster essential life skills such as communication, critical thinking, and creativity,” said Commissioner Cohen Higgins. “This art competition will serve as an opportunity for talented students to showcase their abilities and connect with other fellow artists and organizations around Miami-Dade County. I can’t wait to see what District 8 creates!”
