Commissioner McGhee proposes to bring family-oriented entertainment district to South Dade

MIAMI-DADE – Commissioner Kionne L. McGhee is sponsoring a resolution at the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 19th that will bring an entertainment district, including a container park, to serve as a commerce and entertainment hub in South Dade. The full project will include a world-class park, designated areas for youth sports, activity areas for pets, cultural and art exhibits, and more.

The creation of a business and entertainment container park in the Homestead area would enhance and expanded economic activities, invigorate the area, create jobs, and assist in providing a stronger and more vibrant economy. This project will increase opportunities for employment and economic and business development for the residents of District 9 and Miami-Dade County. It will also provide opportunities to encourage small business growth, including engagement and participation for non-profits in the community.

In October 2022, the NASCAR Cup Series Playoffs will be held at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The creation of an entertainment district would provide a setting where tourists and locals can enjoy entertainment, shopping, and dining near the NASCAR races and would encourage visitors to return for future events.

Entertainment parks of this nature provide a cost-effective, flexible, and ecologically sensitive tenant space through the repurposing of shipping containers into business uses, such as retail shops, entertainment and eating establishments, and community spaces. Similar entertainment parks have been developed throughout the United States, including in Florida, California, New York, Nevada, and Oklahoma.
