Commissioner Martinez co-sponsors resolution to donate surplus police equipment to Ukraine

MIAMI-DADE – On June 1, 2022, Commissioner Martinez co-sponsored a resolution, approved by the Board of County Commissioners, declaring certain police equipment surplus and authorizing the donation of police equipment to the all-Ukrainian union of the national police.

The men and women of Ukraine have been engaged in combat against Russia’s unprovoked and unjustified invasion. The people of Ukraine have been fiercely defending themselves since February 24, 2022, in order to protect their families, their homes and their sovereignty.

There are 5,000 vests of body armor (28 crates of regular vests and 2 pallets of tactical green vests) of police equipment which are obsolete and cannot be used by another County department, municipality in Miami-Dade County, or an eligible community-based organization.

“We need to respond to President Volodymyr Zelensky calling upon the international community to assist the people of Ukraine. This is our contribution to help them in their fight for freedom,” said Commissioner Martinez.
