Commissioner Gonzalez urges the Florida Legislature to approve cost-of-living supplement and other benefits for attorneys and public defenders

MIAMI-DADE – Commissioner Roberto J. Gonzalez sponsored legislation that passed at the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 7, urging the Florida Legislature to provide a cost-of-living pay supplement to offset increasing living demands for attorneys and public defenders employed by Miami-Dade County’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit of Florida.

Additionally, this legislation is requesting that attorneys and public defenders continue to be included in benefits extended to essential workers, including eligibility for the Florida Hometown Heroes Housing Program and participation in the Florida Retirement System’s Deferred Retirement Option Program (DROP) for an additional 36 calendar months beyond the 60-month period – a new modification now afforded to law enforcement officers.

“Attorneys and public defenders play a critical role in our government process and are essential in protecting our citizens. This cost-of-living adjustment and other benefits will enhance the quality of life for these professionals and will positively impact their ability to own a home and make a life here in Miami-Dade County,” said Commissioner Gonzalez.
