MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz helped honor retiring Channel 7 investigative reporter Carmel Cafiero at the Sept. 7, 2016 County Commission meeting.

Cafiero, who joined Channel 7 in 1973 as the station’s first female journalist after working as a radio and TV reporter in her native Louisiana, received a proclamation and words of praise from County Commissioners, who praised her as a trailblazing, tough reporter who had a passion for righting wrongs.

“She helped those who needed help when wrongs had been done to them, and she did it in style,” Commissioner Diaz said.

Cafiero has been recognized over the decades for her hard-hitting and impactful reporting, which not only exposed wrongdoers but also led to changes in the law.

Her series on pill mills earned her the Dupont-Columbia University Award and helped convince state lawmakers to pass a prescription drug monitoring program.
