Commissioner Diaz champions the creation of illegal dumping task force

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – The Miami-Dade County Commission on December 5 approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz to create the 2017 Illegal Dumping Task Force to address the ongoing problem of illegal dumping of trash in Miami-Dade County.

The task force will identify all issues related to illegal dumping and provide a written report of recommendations within 270 days.

“My office receives calls from my constituents on a regular basis regarding illegal dumping, which is a big problem in residential areas and creates a wide range of problems including hurting surrounding property values and damaging the environment,” Commissioner Diaz said.

The County has struggled with the problem for years. In 2006, the Commission established a program that to encourage and reward the reporting incidents of illegal dumping. In 2015, Commissioners established a specialized waste cleanup unit for the unincorporated area to address issues such as illegal dumping. Recurring problems include illegal dumping of materials on a resident’s otherwise legal bulky pick-up pile and dumping trash on the right-of-way.
