Commissioner Diaz calls for more federal funding of Veteran Student Centers

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – The Miami-Dade County Commission on Dec. 19 approved a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz urging Congress to provide funding for Veteran Student Centers.

Veteran Student Centers are college and university lounges which provide veterans an opportunity to socialize with peers and gather academic, financial and social information while improving recruitment, retention, grades and graduation rates. But since 2015, the U.S. Department of Education has not issued any grants funding such centers at institutions of higher learning.

“It’s time to revive federal funding for Veteran Student Centers and acknowledge the critical role they play in helping veterans meet the unique challenges they face in adapting to academic life,” Commissioner Diaz said.
