MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, along with Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez, presented a proclamation to the United States Coast Guard on May 15 in honor of National Safe Boating Week. The presentation took place outside the Stephen P. Clark building in downtown Miami, where there was a Coast Guard boat and trailer on display.

Through the National Recreational Boating Safety Program, the U.S. Coast Guard advocates responsible boating and the importance of wearing a lifejacket. Each year hundreds of people lose their lives in boating incidents, with 80 percent of those deaths caused by drowning. According to the U.S. Coast Guard, of those deaths, 83 percent are reported as not wearing their lifejackets.

National Boating Week is from May 19-25, 2018.
