Commissioner Diaz sponsors resolution condemning Venezuela’s recent sham election

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose "Pepe" Diaz is sponsoring a resolution condemning the recent sham presidential election in Venezuela and supporting efforts by President Donald Trump and Gov. Rick Scott to put financial pressure on the Nicolas Maduro regime.

Commissioner Diaz’s resolution is scheduled for a full Commission vote on Tuesday, June 5. The Commission meeting will begin at 9:30 a.m.

On May 20, 2018, Maduro won a second presidential term in an election that has been widely condemned as illegitimate by the international community. The next day, President Trump issued an executive order prohibiting Americans from purchasing any debt owed to the government of Venezuela.

Florida state agencies are currently banned from investing with companies that do business with Venezuela. Gov. Scott has been urging other state governors to take similar action against the Maduro regime.

The Miami-Dade County Commission has passed several resolutions sponsored by Commissioner Diaz condemning Venezuela’s oppressive regime.

“The Maduro regime, and the Chavez regime before it, have devastated Venezuela both economically and socially, while amassing a horrific record of human rights violations. It’s a tragedy of epic proportions that needs to be brought to an end,” said Commissioner Diaz, whose district includes Doral, which is home to one of the largest concentrations of Venezuelans in the United States.
