Commissioner Diaz dedicates street in honor of El Dorado matriarch

Commissioners Jose “Pepe” Diaz and Rebeca Sosa join members of the Capó family to unveil Aida Rosa Capó Way.

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz honored the matriarch of the family that founded the El Dorado furniture store at an Oct 30 ceremony co-designating Northwest 72nd Avenue between 12th Street and its terminus just south of Miami International Airport as Aida Rosa Capó Way.

The ceremony took place inside the El Dorado furniture store at 1260 NW 72nd Ave. Capó family members were present.

Aida Capó’s family describe her as the “motivation and spiritual force” that inspired her husband and six children to leave Cuba for the United States, where they founded El Dorado, which now has 15 stores in South Florida and is considered the largest Hispanic-owned furniture retailer in the United States. The store’s name is a tribute to the small sailboat in which Manuel Capó and his sons Luis and Carlos crossed the Straits of Florida in 1966.

“Aida Capó’s story and that of her family exemplifies the freedom-loving and enterprising spirit of so many Cuban exiles who forged successful new lives in the United States for themselves and their families,” Commissioner Diaz said.

The newly rededicated street runs adjacent to the El Dorado facilities located north of Northwest 12th Street.
