Commissioner Diaz joins in calls for special task force to prosecute Maduro crimes

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Commission on July 10 adopted a resolution sponsored by Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz that supports U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio’s efforts in urging Attorney General William Barr to create a special task force to investigate and prosecute crimes committed by Venezuela’s Maduro regime.

The Trump administration has imposed sanctions against the Venezuelan government and recognized Juan Guaido, head of Venezuela’s National Assembly, as the nation’s interim president after Nicolás Maduro was sworn in for a six-year term as president following an election that international observers roundly condemned as fraudulent.

Maduro has been condemned by the international community for numerous crimes including detaining and murdering political opponents, transnational drug-trafficking, and harboring terrorists.

“The Maduro regime is a threat to democracy, regional stability, and our own national security, and it’s time to bring him to justice for his many crimes,” Commissioner Diaz said.

Commissioner Diaz, whose district includes Doral, which is home to the largest concentration of Venezuelans in the United States, has sponsored several resolutions condemning Venezuela’s socialist dictatorship.
