Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz advances legislation to formalize the County’s participation in the SkillBridge program

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY – On the May 4, 2021, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved a resolution sponsored by Chairman Jose "Pepe" Diaz directing the County Mayor to work with the United States Department of Defense (DoD) to secure the County’s participation in the SkillBridge program. The program is an opportunity for Service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through specific industry training, apprenticeships, or internships during the last 180 days of service.

DoD’s SkillBridge connects Service members with industry partners in real-world job experiences. Miami-Dade County is home to approximate 85,000 veterans.

“This is a win-win situation, for Service members, SkillBridge provides an invaluable chance to work and learn in civilian career areas, and for industry partners SkillBridge is an opportunity to access and leverage the world’s most highly trained and motivated workforce at no cost,” said Chairman Diaz who serves as Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Military Affairs Board and served in the U.S. Marines. “Service members participating in SkillBridge receive their military compensation and benefits, and industry partners provide the training and work experience.”

Every year approximately 200,000 members of the United States Armed Forces depart active duty and enter other forms of employment, bringing with them the extensive experience, skills, and work ethics gained during their service in the military.

The Mayor or her designee, is directed to bring forth a memorandum of understanding within 90 days of the effective date of this resolution, and provide a written report summarizing the County’s participation in the SkillBridge program. Subsequent reports will be filed annually during the month of April, beginning in year 2022.
