A monument will honor Army’s brave surgeons at Ryder Trauma Center
MIAMI-DADE – A plan is taking shape to recognize Army surgeons’ heroism by adding a permanent tribute on the grounds of Ryder Trauma Center, the go-to surgical training facility for the United States Army.
The Miami-Dade County Commission on July 20 adopted a resolution sponsored by Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz that directs the county to design and install a permanent marker, or monument, on the grounds of the trauma center at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Since 2001, the U.S. Army has relied on Ryder Trauma Center as the nation’s Army Forward Surgical Team Training facility, which readies teams of surgeons to help those injured on the battlefield.
“This recognition helps honor the bravery and sacrifice of these heroic surgeons who risk their lives to help those in the field,” said Chairman Diaz, who honorably served as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Diaz is Miami-Dade County's Military Liaison and Chairman of Miami-Dade County’s Military Affairs Board.
The resolution calls for identifying any legally available funds for the marker or monument, including possible donations from the private sector.
The Jackson Health System, Miami-Dade County’s most vital health care resource, includes Jackson Memorial Hospital, Jackson South Medical Center and Jackson North Medical Center. It also includes the Ryder Trauma Center, one of the world’s busiest and most renowned trauma centers, with locations at Jackson Memorial Hospital and Jackson South Medical Center.
