MIAMI-DADE – On Aug. 28, Chairman Jose “Pepe” Diaz and Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins joined family and friends at the official street naming ceremony for Capt. Gustavo “Gus” Duarte, a public servant who worked at the Miami-Dade Police Department and passed away Feb. 9 at the age of 60.
Chairman Diaz and Commissioner Cohen Higgins both sponsored the legislation to honor Duarte, who joined the police department in 1985, spent the last 36 years in law enforcement and was a mentor to many in the force. Before joining the police department, Duarte served in the United States Coast Guard.
A portion of Southwest 103rd Avenue from Southwest 132nd Street to 134th Street will now be known as “Captain Gustavo ‘Gus’ Duarte Way” in his honor.
Capt. Duarte is survived by his wife, Aimee, his children, Gustavo III and Jessica Lynn, his mother, Elvira, his sister, Tanya, and his brother, Alex.
