Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo Jr.’s statement on the passing of Maurice A. Ferré
MIAMI-DADE – “Today, Miami mourns the passing of former mayor of the City of Miami, Maurice A. Ferré. A statesman, businessman, and trailblazer, Maurice changed Miami-Dade County for the better. Maurice embodied strong values and heartfelt convictions that are embedded in the fabric of our community. As Mayor of Miami, Maurice was instrumental in supporting the creation of the Metrorail in 1980, which was the largest, self-driven people mover system in the U.S. Regardless of one’s party affiliation, Maurice’s council was sought by all, including myself, who admired him. A Puerto Rican, Maurice welcomed Cuban exiles fleeing the Castro regime with open arms and helped acclimate them to the American way of life.
We will never forget his many contributions to the growth and development of the Magic City. Viviana and I send our deepest condolences to the Ferré family during this time of bereavement. His legacy will endure.”
