Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo, Jr.’s statement on the Aventura Brightline Station
MIAMI-DADE – On October 11, 2019, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved the Aventura Brightline Station – agreeing to purchase land designated for the station – with a park-and-ride commuting lot and a pedestrian bridge – connecting the new transportation depot to the mall. A key stipulation in the development of the station site will be also be reserved for new workforce housing.
“For most cities, transportation projects typically take decades. They require years of planning, talking, and organizing; and in many cases, they don’t always come to fruition,” Commissioner Bovo said. “In our case, Miami-Dade has a tremendous opportunity in partnering with a public-private partner like Brightline. We’ve recognized for a long time that there was an opportunity to expand Brightline’s service and, in turn, improve upon Miami’s transportation infrastructure. This new station will remove cars off the road, improve residents' quality of life, provide much needed workforce housing, and create economic benefits for local businesses looking to expand their footprint. With this development of the Northeast Corridor, we are not only further enhancing transportation service, but we are also increasing revenue opportunities that will help fulfill the corridors for the Miami SMART Plan. I look forward to working with Brightline to getting this project on line as fast as possible. By taking a step forward in expanding our transportation infrastructure, we are properly planning for the future and current needs of the residents of Miami Dade.”
