County Commission approves Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo’s resolution endorsing Florida bills to allow college athletes to sign endorsement deals
MIAMI-DADE – On November 19, 2019, the Board of County Commissioners approved Commissioner Esteban L. Bovo, Jr.’s resolution expressing support to allow collegiate student athletes to receive compensation from their name, image, and likeness. Governor Ron DeSantis endorsed legislation that would allow Florida’s more than 11,000 student athletes, as defined in the four Florida bills filed for the 2020 session, to earn compensation for the use of their name, image, and likeness.
“Student athletes in Florida make universities millions of dollars. It is only right and fair that athletes profit from their skills and talents,” Commissioner Bovo said. “I applaud my colleagues for approving my resolution supporting Florida Governor Ron DeSantis’s endorsement of pending bills before the Florida Legislature that would allow student athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness. This resolution helps relieve the financial constraints imposed on student athletes by the National Collegiate Athletic Association, which are not imposed on any other segment of the student population. Once again, I thank the Board for expressing support in allowing Florida’s more than 11,000 student athletes to earn compensation as they play America’s true pastime.”
