County Commission approves Commissioner Bovo’s resolution urging the Florida Legislature to prohibit tolling and express lanes on State Road 826
MIAMI-DADE – On January 22, 2020, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved Commissioner Esteban “Steve” Bovo’s resolution urging the Florida Legislature to enact Senate Bill (SB) 1090 by Senator Manny Diaz, Jr. and House Bill (HB) 829 by Representative Bryan Avila. Both bills would do the following: prohibit the existence of any tolling and express lanes on State Road 826, require the express lanes that currently exist on State Road 826 to be immediately opened to the public, require any tolls that exist on said road to be immediately removed, and prohibit any tolls from being imposed for use of said road.
Commissioner Bovo has continuously expressed his disapproval of excessive tolled lanes in Miami-Dade County. At the Transportation Planning Organization (TPO), Vice-Chairman Bovo initiated a motion that was unanimously adopted by the TPO to remove all tolls within tolls, or express lanes, within the Homestead Extension of the Florida Turnpike. On November 19, 2019, the Miami-Dade Board of County Commissioners approved the Commissioner’s resolution urging FDOT to eliminate toll lanes on the 826 and restore the Palmetto to a toll-free expressway.
“I want to thank my colleagues on the Board of County Commissioners for approving my resolution while siding with residents who have tirelessly expressed significant concerns regarding the uncapped costs associated with the new express lanes,” Commissioner Bovo said. “I also want to thank State Senator Manny Diaz, Jr. and State Representative Bryan Avila for introducing legislation that will help alleviate traffic congestion and remove burdens on daily commuters in Miami-Dade County.”
