Commissioner Rene Garcia’s statement on the veto override of the Urban Development Boundary

MIAMI-DADE – “I supported Mayor Levine Cava’s veto of the decision to move the Urban Development Boundary to build a warehouse park on vital environmentally sensitive lands,” said Commissioner Rene Garcia. “Both our state and federal partners have stated concerns that the land and waterways in the application area are key to our active efforts to restore the Everglades and Biscayne Bay. US Senator Marco Rubio urged the Commission not to approve the application. Additionally, Governor DeSantis’ Department of Environmental Protection clearly advocated against this application as well. In fact, the Army Corps of Engineers has a meeting on the next steps on this project tomorrow. Our community has already invested millions of dollars and decades of work into restoration efforts - which the Commission is now putting in jeopardy by allowing industrial development at the expense of our environmental health and long-term prosperity. The residents of Miami-Dade County were the losers in this deal.”
