Federal Judge Permanently Halts Provisions Restricting Constitutional Rights
MIAMI-DADE – Late last week, U.S. District Judge Beth Bloom ruled to permanently halt provisions that prevent elected officials from exercising their constitutional rights to petition their government for a redress of grievances. This ruling is a victory for all defenders of the First Amendment. As Judge Bloom noted in her ruling, the law is overly broad and has the potential of impacting others not part of the suit by restricting them from constitutionally protected speech.
It is important to stand firm in one's belief, and as a great defender of our First Amendment right, Senator García felt it would have been hypocritical not to speak up because it was members of his own party pushing this amendment to Florida's Constitution.
“This ruling is a great victory for all defenders of the First Amendment, especially a citizen’s constitutional right to petition their government,” said Senator García. “The First Amendment prevails for everyone in our great state.”
