Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis Leads Reform of County Funding Process for Nonprofits
Today, the Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved legislation from Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis aimed at fixing long standing problems with the County’s Community Based Organization funding process.
The legislation directs the County Mayor to deliver a clear review of how nonprofit organizations are funded, selected, and evaluated, including a full assessment of long standing legacy groups. The report will provide the first public countywide analysis of performance, reach, and results.
“For too long this process has confused the public and frustrated the very groups trying to serve our families,” Commissioner Milian Orbis said. “Residents deserve a process that is fair, transparent, and focused on real results. This is the first step toward rebuilding trust and delivering the accountability our taxpayers expect.”
The report, due in 120 days, will examine the competitive grant process used last year, evaluate the work of legacy organizations, and compare their services with other nonprofit partners and County programs.
“Miami Dade invests millions in human services every year,” she said. “We owe it to our residents to make sure these dollars are reaching people in need and supporting programs that work.”
The resolution passed with broad support and was co-primed by Senator Rene Garcia and co-sponsored by Commissioners Roberto J Gonzalez and Vicki Lopez. Once completed, the report will return to the Board for public review and action.
