The Pursue of Excellence - Dax Aldecocea
Dax Aldecocea The Pursuer of Excellence Award School for Advanced Studies Wolfson Campus, 12th grade
Commissioner Xavier L. Suarez, District 7
Dax truly embodies what it means to be a change maker and scholar in his community. A high school senior who has already earned countless college credits, Dax is a leader amongst his peers at the Miami Dade College School for Advance Studies, Wolfson campus.
Along with maintaining his 5.2 grade point average, Dax has a passion for service and impacting the lives of others. He currently serves as Chairman of the Miami-Dade County Youth Commission, was appointed to the Calling All Men: Stand against Violence Planning Committee, is an executive officer of the Florida League of Young Immigrants and completed an internship in the office of Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
He has also attended the Wharton Leadership Conference in the Business World Program at the University of Pennsylvania, is a Varsity Rower at the Miami Rowing Club and attended the Princeton University High Performance Rowing Camp.
In the future, Dax plans to attend an Ivy League Institution and major in either Political Science or Economics. He hopes to eventually implement strategies to progress his community forward as an elected official.
The Unstoppable Scholar - Amanda Montero
Southwest Miami Senior High, 12th grade
Sen. Javier Souto, District 10
Along with having the discipline to attain a 3.8 grade point average at Southwest Miami Senior High, Amanda is an active change agent in her school and community. She is an anchor of strength for her family and friends.
Amanda is tremendously passionate about assisting others through health services. She credits part of her passion for serving others to her love for her mother.
After complications surrounding back surgery, Amanda’s mother has had challenges with recovery and mobility. She began taking more initiative at home and adopted the primary role of cooking, cleaning, and ensuring the wellbeing of her family.
Today, she volunteers with Kendall Regional Hospitals’ emergency room staff. Her other passions are fitness and healthy living; making an effort to exercise daily along with her friends.
Amanda is also a skilled musician who is mastering the piano, violin and cello. She plans to continue following her passion for healthcare and intends on attending the University of Miami, Florida International University or Nova Southeastern University next fall to begin her pursuit of a career in the medical field.

Yaelle is constantly striving to achieve academically, professionally and socially. Along with maintaining a 4.7 grade point average, she is a passionate volunteer in her community and a participant in the Miami-Dade Police Departments Police Explorers Program.
Outside of her academics, Yaelle keeps a full schedule with after school programs and community based organizations. She is a leader within her schools Woman of Tomorrow Club and the Horticulture club which emphasizes to students the importance of agricultural life within our planet through service initiatives.
Recently Yaelle assisted in organizing a project to paint homes within her community in conjunction with “Live like Bella.” She is also an avid supporter of Relay for Life of East Kendall.
Already exceeding her schools requirements for community service hours as a sophomore, Yaelle leads and encourages her peers to get more involved in their neighborhoods by engaging with service organizations.
