The Women’s Park and the Girl Scouts Host Reading In the Park, February 28, 2009, 1 – 4 P.M.

The Free Event, in Honor of Marice Cohn Band, the 2009 In The Company Of Women Award Winner in Communications and Literature, Will Also Feature Hands-On Activities, Arts & Crafts, and Word Games Children’s Books Written by Women Authors Will Be Featured

Miami-Dade Park and Recreation's The Women's Park and the Girl Scouts will host a free reading in the park event on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m., as part of a series of events at the Women's Park honoring the 2009 winners of the In the Company of Women Awards, an awards presentation given by Miami-Dade Park and Recreation which pays tribute to outstanding local women from various industries and backgrounds.  

Patrons are invited to join the Girl Scouts as various children's stories, written by leading women authors, will be read out loud to the audience by volunteers.  Other activities also taking place on Saturday include word games, hands-on activities, and arts and crafts.  Children of all ages are invited to participate alongside the Girl Scouts. 

The event also honors the 2009 In the Company of Women award winner in the field of communications and literature - Marice Cohn Band, who is a 27-year veteran photographer at the Miami Herald.  For the past 15 years, she has devoted countless hours leading Girl Scouts in Miami Beach.  She is a staff photojournalist for the Miami Herald.  Her images have captured life in Florida, the Caribbean, and Latin America.  She has won numerous awards in international, national, state, and local competitions. 

Girl Scouts of the United States was founded in 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low with 18 members but has grown to millions today.  Girl Scouts is dedicated to help guide and teach girls life skills that will benefit them for the rest of their lives.  With the help of committed adult volunteers, these young girls develop qualities of leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. The 21st annual In the Company of Women Awards Ceremony, presented by Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, Chairman Dennis Moss and the Board of County Commissioners, and the Miami-Dade Park and Recreation Department, will be March 4, 2009 at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables.  This annual awards presentation recognizes the accomplishments of women in all professions throughout Miami-Dade County.  Tickets for the awards ceremony are $50 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster by calling 305-358-5885 or www.ticketmaster.com.
