Shooting (Police-Involved) - Update #4

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Homicide Bureau, is investigating a police-involved shooting.  According to investigators, an on-duty MDPD police officer approached a suspicious subject at the listed gasoline station and a violent confrontation ensued.  The subject attacked the police officer, stabbing him multiple times, until the officer discharged his firearm, striking the subject.  The officer was transported [by other MDPD officers] to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital where he remains in serious condition.  The subject died on the scene.

Additional details regarding the incident, including an update on the officer’s condition, is forthcoming.

UPDATE #1:  MDPD officer continues to recover from injuries he sustained during the incident and has been upgraded to stable condition.

Information will be provided as it becomes available.

UPDATE #2:  Ofc. Gutierrez has been employed with MDPD for approximately 21 years.  Currently, he is assigned to the Motors Unit at the Airport District.

UPDATE #3:  Upon further investigation, it appears the on-duty MDPD police officer observed the subject setting fire to newspapers while attempting to ignite the gasoline station via its underground gasoline valve access port.  The officer immediately activated the station’s emergency shut-off button and engaged the subject.  The subject violently attacked the officer, stabbing him multiple times with both a knife (8” blade) and a large screwdriver.  The seriously injured officer discharged his firearm, striking and killing the subject.  The subject was later found to be in possession of box cutters, in addition to the knife and screwdriver that he possessed.

As a result of his serious injuries, the officer has undergone surgical procedures and has been upgraded to a stable condition by Jackson Memorial Hospital medical staff.

UPDATE #4:  The Miami-Dade Office of the State Attorney has closed the case and the video of the assault is available on the FTP site.
