Police Involved Shooting

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

An Officer from the Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) was involved in a shooting after a subject bit him, almost severing his finger.  The incident occurred in Northwest Miami-Dade and involved an officer from the Northside District.

At approximately 5:09 this morning, MDPD dispatched an officer to an accident at the 119 Street entrance ramp of south-bound I-95.  Upon arrival at the scene, the officer made contact with a Road Ranger who advised him that the subject, later identified as Junior Prosper, had been driving a taxi which crashed, and had run from the scene, south onto I-95.  The officer gave chase and attempted to apprehend Prosper. In an ensuing altercation, Prosper bit the officer almost severing a finger on his left hand. At this point the officer discharged his service weapon, hitting Prosper.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue pronounced Prosper deceased at the scene. The officer was transported to Ryder Trauma Center where he underwent surgery for his injuries. He has since been released.

The officer’s Electronic Control Device (ECD) was discharged during the altercation,  Detectives are investigating to determine if it was discharged by the Officer or Prosper.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is conducting the investigation.  No further information is available at this time.
