Shooting involving a three year old


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 

The Miami-Dade Police Department's (MDPD), Special Victims Bureau, Vulnerable Victims Unit, is investigating an incident where a child accidentally shot herself and has arrested a family member for child neglect. 

According to investigators, the child was at her residence under the care of a family member, Orlando Young.  While Mr. Young was watching television, he left his firearm unattended on the living room sofa. The child was able to obtain possession of the firearm and accidently shot herself in the hand. The MDPD, Priority Response Team immediately responded and contacted Mr. Young and learned the that the child was transported to a local hospital by other family members. After further investigation, Orlando Young was arrested for Child Neglect with Great Bodily Harm.  The Department of Children and Families was notified. 

The investigation continues.
