Stephen P. Clark Center, courthouses evacuated due to seismic tremors

MIAMI ( January 28, 2020 )

On Tuesday, January 28, 2020, personnel from the Stephen P. Clark Center (Government Center), Dade County Courthouse, Miami-Dade Children's Courthouse, Overtown Child Support Division and Lawson E. Thomas Courthouse Center evacuated the buildings as a precaution due to what has been reported as tremors caused by seismic activity related to an earthquake in the Caribbean Sea.

As always, following any effects from a natural occurrence, engineers will examine the buildings to ensure their structural integrity.

In addition, per the National Tsunami Warning Center, there is NO tsunami threat for the eastern United States.

“At this time, we have no reports of loss of life in Jamaica or Cuba from the magnitude 7.7 earthquake, and I pray it stays that way,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “It was a very strong quake with the effects being felt even in Miami.”
