Temporary Restraining Order reiterates proactive steps already taken by Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department

MIAMI ( April 07, 2020 )

Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department (MDCR) is in receipt of a temporary restraining order issued by a federal district court judge with respect to the Metro West Detention Center (MWDC). MDCR takes the COVID-19 pandemic very seriously and, notably, continues to have no positive COVID-19 cases in the inmate population. A complaint filed by seven inmates makes several allegations regarding procedures at the MWDC. These allegations do not reflect the proactive steps already implemented by MDCR as a matter of its business practice, and to protect the health and well-being of MDCR employees and inmates in its custody during this COVID-19 situation. As a result, the temporary restraining order entered today largely reiterates the steps already in place across the MDCR system.

MDCR's top priority is the health and well-being of not only MDCR staff but also the individuals entrusted in our care. MDCR continues to assess its operational practices as the COVID-19 situation evolves to ensure the best approach to keep MDCR staff, medical staff and inmates safe.
