Miami-Dade County Observes Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week April 18 - 24

County's Mosquito Control Division showcases control and protection methods during statewide initiative

MIAMI ( April 16, 2021 )

For the second year in a row, the Miami-Dade County Mosquito Control and Habitat Management Division is observing Florida Mosquito Control Awareness Week Sunday, April 18 through Saturday, April 24, 2021. The division will be highlighting ways mosquito control improves the quality of life for residents, showcase what it is they do on a year-round basis, and provide information on how to protect against bites and the spread of mosquito-borne illness.

"Although every week is mosquito week here in Miami-Dade, we appreciate the chance to highlight what we do here day-to-day to help keep people safe," says Division Director Dr. William Petrie. "We look forward to celebrating what we do as a division, as well as spotlighting the efforts that our staff puts forward all year round."

The week was initiated in 2020 by the Florida Mosquito Control Association as a way for all state-wide mosquito control agencies to call attention to the vital and often thankless work they do.

Here is Miami-Dade County's schedule of themes and events for the week:

Sunday - official launch: a look at the planned activities
Monday - Drain and Cover: explanation of campaign; Twitter Chat at 12 noon ET; Facebook Live session with Community Newspapers, 3 p.m.
Tuesday - repellents: examining the four main types; Facebook Live Q&A with Dr. Petrie from Mosquito Control HQ, 12 noon
Wednesday - how to properly maintain bromeliads; virtual outreach sessions
Thursday - how to protect your pets; virtual outreach sessions
Friday - how to request an inspection; virtual outreach sessions
Saturday - appreciating our Mosquito Control professionals

The timing of the week could not be better, as Miami-Dade is about to enter its rainy season, which along with increasing temperatures, makes for the peak activity time for mosquitoes. Residents are highly encouraged to engage and participate in online activities by following the division on social media @305Mosquito on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
